The Canon of Doesburg
Thousand years in seven windows

In the Canon of Doesburg, the people of Doesburg share the history of their city through words and images. In the cellars of the Arsenaal, visitors look through seven interactive windows —situated in the arches— to historically important locations in the city. These windows serve as a source of information and knowledge about the history and culture of Doesburg.

Doesburg, first mentioned in 1053, received city rights in 1237 due to its strategic location at the confluence of the Oude IJssel and Gelderse IJssel rivers, grew into an important fortified and Hanseatic city in the Middle Ages, but saw its prosperity decline after the 15th century, remaining a well-preserved historic town with over 150 monuments today.

Overview exhibition Canon van Doesburg.

The Arsenaal itself, a former religious complex from at least 1343 that became a military arsenal in 1732 until 1923, and after renovations, reopened in 2014 as a multifunctional center housing the tourist office, a restaurant, and businesses, is featured in the exhibition with the theme Brave women and the clash of arms.

Other historical aspects of Doesburg explored in the exhibition include the seemingly medieval Town Hall and Weigh House which have a more complex history; the city farms, remnants of a time when farmers sought refuge within the fortified city walls; the prominent Martinikerk, a symbol of faith and pride with a turbulent past; the IJsselkade, which transformed from a fortification feature to an industrial zone and then a modern promenade; the city’s history as a fortified city with its evolving defenses; and Doesburg’s tradition of craft and trade, from its time in the Hanseatic League to the rise of industries like mustard making and iron foundries.

When the windows are not activated, they form a panorama, in which the colours of the sky change during the day.

At each of the seven windows, you’ll find an activation point on the floor. When you stand on the activation point, the window starts automatically. The story in image and sound unfolds in front of you, until you move to another window. With a minimum of physical objects, the whole space is transformed into a digital panorama of the city, its culture and history.

Studio

RNDR is a design studio for interactive media that develops ‘tools’ that are only finished by how they are used.

To achieve this, we develop processes, create structures, design visualisations, code programs, and create interactions. The end result can manifest itself across different media, ranging from interactive installations, data visualisations, generative identities, prints and everything in between – often real-time. We are triggered by how information and technology transforms networks, cultures, societies, relationships, behaviours, and interactions between people. Our work explores and engages with hybrid space as it embraces both digital and physical realms.

RNDR was founded in 2017 in The Hague, (NL). Its main members have years of experience as partners, computer scientists, designers, art directors and developers at LUST and LUSTlab.

One of our core projects, and basis for most of our projects, is OPENRNDR, an open source framework for creative coding –written in Kotlin for the JVM– with over 13 years of development. OPENRNDR simplifies writing real-time audio-visual interactive software. OPENRNDR is fundamental for the capacity of RNDR as a studio, as it allows us to realize complex interactive works. OPENRNDR was awarded the Dutch Design Award 2019
